Music Check-In, August '23
With a third of the year left here’s what I’ve been listening to lately.
Bunny X - “Go Back”
I included a song by this synthwave duo on my mid year music check-in. I’m still just kinda grooving on their easy-breezy take on 80s inspired pop (just look at that cover art). This song comes from their 2021 debut album Young & In Love. This is something like the fourth song from a goth/electro/wave band I’ve heard this year containing a sax, so I think I’m going to call that a trend.
Black Magique - “Fashion Kills”
Here’s a track I came across recently. At first I thought I’d stumbled upon some new underground hotness - but no, this is apparently ten years old from 2013. I like how the duo trade off vocals, and I dig the sorta disaffected delivery of the female vocalist. This comes from the only album they released, outside of a two track single in 2016.
Catherine Moan - “Jawbreaker”
A recent single from Catherine Moan, who also appeared in my March check-in (that one is still in my regular rotation). She has this sort of quirky art school vibe I surprisingly like.
Madeline Goldstein - “Seed of Doubt”
Madeline Goldstein runs with the image of some dark chanteuse of the night, and her vocal delivery really helps sell that. She used to be with Portland based Fringe Class but has now struck out on her own in the L.A. scene apparently. I like her sound, though to be honest listening to multiple tracks in a row of hers it does start to sound a little samey. Still recommended.
